Wonderland tells the story of a young woman who, abandoned her own family, embarks on a dangerous journey into the unknown. By drawing its inspiration from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, The Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum and the film Shame by Steve McQueen, the pièce analyzes the appeal of success and notoriety, the fascination with eroticism and the invasion of pornography in popular culture.
Dream-like, penetrating and highly physical – says the director – «it is the sexual fantasy, the curiosity which leads Alice to step into the burrow of the White Rabbit, into an unknown world over which she has no control; it is her desire to put herself to the test and to face the dangers she might encounter; it is the opening of a door onto a reality we should probably never even know about». Actors from England, Belgium, Serbia, Portugal overcome language barriers by performing in a show – recommended for an adult audience – supported by advanced technology, ranging from high definition video installation to hyperrealistic sound surround.
Matthew Lenton has worked at the Tron Theatre, Traverse Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He is currently Artistic Director at Van-ishing Point, a company he founded in Glasgow in 1999. Interiors, Saturday Night and Subway are among his most recent works.
