This text is taken from the diary of Herculine Barbin, discovered for the first time in 1874. Michel Foucault found this extraordinary document for his research on hermaphroditism in different cultures and published it, keeping the authenticity of the diary and adding the clinical part of the case. It is the true story of someone who was thought to be a girl until she was found to be a hermaphrodite. Society forced her to change her identity and become a male. Unable to recognize her new self, the young woman took her life, because she could not recognise her new self. It is an extremely modern text that describes the violence with which society tries to establish gender identity.
