Marcelo Savignone is a young Argentinian director of the same generation as Claudio Tolcachir and Romina Paula, artists who received great acclaim by the public of the 2012 edition of the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia in the Focus on Argentine theatre. The poetry of these directors is distinguished by the attention that they pay to classic authors, the representation of daily scenes and the light touch that they give to the mise-en- scene. Savignone brings a highly original version of Cechov’s Uncle Vanya to the Festival: a brilliant performance, both comic and surreal which brings together the Russian and Argentine cultures. «A Vania – says the director – brings together all previous “Vanjas” lost in time and still anchored to inertia and apathy, avoiding any responsibility for their own lives. The plot respects Cechov’s original text but it is enriched by superimposition, fragmentation and repetition which confer a verbal giddiness to the prose. The disorder on stage reflects the confusion that the characters are living; they constantly turn the space upside down as they don’t know where to go».
