A young Philémon surprises his wife Matilda in bed with another man. The lover quickly escapes through the window, leaving his clothes behind. Philémon decides to punish his wife by forcing her to treat the lover’s suit as if it were a guest, until the day he even tells her to dance with “him” at a party!
Built around a story by South African author Can Themba entitled The Suit, the performance combines musical comedy, griot story, Greek tragedy and silent film. Despite the performance being lighthearted and comical at times, the underlying themes are the brutality of apartheid and the violence of racism.
In a minimalist setting, through objects of symbolic valency and live music, the English master pays tribute to South African culture by offering a poetic and emotional mise en scène.
