The Greek Dimitris Papaioannou is one of the most important names of the International scene. He is a pioneer of Contemporary dance and pitches his new creation: The Great Tamer to the 10th edition of the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia.
His work has been defined as a “hybrid flower” referring to its artistic con-taminations that improve the art-work. Dimitris Papaioannou’s work was discovered by the great maestro Robert Wilson and now is being studied by great choreographers such as Akram Khan, who used the “Body Mechanic System” technique. According to the choreographer from Athens, the human bodies turn into battlefields interacting with raw materials. The bodies blur into hybrid creatures, creating spectacular optical illusions. The eclectic artist with a Belle art background involves 11 dancers to create something focused on the human life. Human life is intended to be a voyage of discovery, the exploration of a hidden treasure. The artist refers to Life as an inner archaeology site full of meanings. The central point is the Mediterranean and the cradle of our civilization. He goes through contemporary languages highlighting the great cultural value of Greece. This Country is developing an interesting sense of research for artistic endeavours, despite of the difficult economical situation.
The passion for art improves the strength of the visual impact juggling his-tory of art allusions and methods of expressions. The choreographic signs are minimal and embedded in impressive scenery, set in a way to create an absurd and surreal carnival universe on the stage. Dimitris Papaioannou’s goal is simple, but the way to reach it is not. His intention in The Great Tamer is to focus on the universal ideas of sacred and profane.
