Summer, according to the author Edward Bond, is «a European drama» which reflects the effects of war and violence on the human psyche. The drama takes place on an island of ex Yugoslavia where Marta and xenia meet. Their pasts were closely linked during the Nazi occupation and they meet again for the first time in many years.
Like a classical tragedy or a Shakespearean drama, Bond’s protagonists are faced with important historical events: the Second World War, the Nazi concentration camps, enemy collaboration, resistance fighters. Everything is reflected in the dialogue of a former maid who has now come up in the world and now owns the house where she once worked with her former mistress, forced into exile for many years. Not only do we have the two women but also their children who, coincidentally, fall in love with each other, and a former German soldier who returns to the island on holiday with his grandchildren.
Directed by Daniele Salvo and interpreted by Elisabetta Pozzi, Melania Giglio and Luca Lazzareschi, the drama places the spectator in front of an impassioned conflict, very contemporary and with a powerful emotional undercurrent: there are things that cannot be forgotten, old resentments which, even after forty years, are still very much alive.
