The word “spogliare”, from the latin “spŏliare”, literally means “to undress”, taking off clothes. In extension, it could also mean to dis-armour, as in to strip a soldier from his armour and weapons. Toy (English term [der. “to toy”]), is an object with the purpose of entertaining. In this case, however, it refers to a weak person without personality, that can easily be manipulated and pressured
by others. The two words together recall the term “spogliatoi”, meaning locker rooms; which is the real key in interpreting a hidden genre, far from indiscrete eyes, where sport is taken to a much more intimate dimension. Showers, sweat, rolled-up socks, soap and shampoo, face creams and lotions… all these things are barely visible among the broken lockers and worn-out benches.
The squeaky sounds of knobs and water puddles on the floor, as well as the long lines of coat-hangers by the entrance door. The coach is rallying up the players before the match starts. Meanwhile, viewers come in groups, invisible “voyeurs” spotted by the unsettling angel that will rise to the position of soul judge. The show consists of eleven monologues, stories of football players/toys, unaware colossus of today, that have chosen the game in the name of freedom and joy.
