Dmitrij Shostakovich wasn’t only one of the greatest musicians of Twentieth Century, he was also a passionate football fan. The show “Se Spartak piange…” is a collection of his commentaries and his sport’s memories, through which a portion of soviet history (going from the 30’s and 60’s of the previous century) is told and retraced, featuring some rather troublesome characters. The show tells of Nikolaij Starostin and Lev Jashin, two famous football players with different luck; their stories intertwine, in a plot giving attention to real happenings and imagined considerations, with the music by Shostakovich, a composer always in public and private contrast with the establishment and power representatives of his time. Giovanni Esposito gives voice and shape to Shostakovich, this time in his many aspects: sad, proud, lashing, humble and passionate. The Soviet composer’s music is played by the Brass Quintetto of the Teatro San Carlo, telling – in seven scenes – a story of music, football and politics. A story, everything but ordinary, on Soviet life.
