If we accept the fact that theatre stage photography aims at offering an interpretation of the represented show, regardless of the compositional aspect set out by the director, we must then recognize that the photographer is himself a privileged member of the audience, capable of analysing with a critical eye. Almost as if he were reviewing the show, he must feel free to offer a personal interpretation according to his individual sensibility, his own culture and technical visual abilities. Although it’s not a fixed rule, we can very often grasp the true essence of a show by capturing in a single instant behavioural aspects, gestures, or a facial expression of the actor on stage. This allows us to keep the memory of an artistic event that is already over just as it is being performed. If we manage to transmit and convey through such images the essence and atmosphere of what is happening on stage, then stage photography becomes something else, not just a recording.
Such is the work by Tommaso Le Pera, the man known as “the photographer” in Italian theatre. Le Pera gave life to an innovative way of documenting the scene: not posing photography, but stolen shots, made quickly, capable of capturing fleeing moments in time between a laugh and an applause.
