Giardino Romantico di Palazzo Reale
(1996, 107’) by Al Pacino
Al Pacino decides to stage Shakespeare’s Richard III and gathers a company of actors to start trying out the script. The work, however, proceeds in an unusual way. He stops the rehearsals and heads for the streets of New York where he listens to random people giving their opinion on Shakespeare. He then interviews some famous colleagues – John Gielgud, Derek Jacobi, Kenneth Branagh, Vanessa Redgrave, James Earl Jones and Kevin Kline – asking them their way of interpreting the English playwright. At last, the staging of the tragedy resumes and the actors, given their parts, start their work on the scripts, trying to understand and explain the text to audiences.
Guest: Stefano Manferlotti, professor in English Literature at Università Federico II di Napoli
