In an essay on the philosophy of sport, Carlo Melchiorri came up with a gymnastics glossary where he mentioned the term levitas; an adequate Latinism used to refer to the “smoothness” and souplesse (in La Capria’s words) of motion. Levity; an ideal state of transcendency which every athlete, according to Melchiorri, must find within a perfect balance between record and style.
Any transgression of this balance may be noted down as Sport Mistake. This is where SportOpera 2019 starts from: from the error, or any possible account that the athlete’s body may suggest when violating the transcendent harmony of the levitas.
