Sometimes, when reading a book or watching a play, we are caught up in the story of the protagonists; we want to know who they were and what did they do before being immortalised on paper, or before appearing on stage. This is exactly what Michele Santeramo has done; starting from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, he tells us what happened before the death of King Hamlet.
«The absolute power of sovereigns […] can be found today only in the workings of the Mafia. This is what the text is inspired by: words such as dignity, honour, respect today are used only in reference to the world which conserves a dictatorial structure where one person simply commands and the others simply obeys. King Hamlet is ill: he has lost his memory. He cannot remember anything, not even who his wife is, nor his son Hamlet, and not even the face of his brother Claudius. He can’t remember anything but he still commands, he still holds the power of life and death of everyone in his hands, just like a Mafia boss».
