A young boy on the day of his thirteenth birthday is with the rest of his family at a crowded swimming pool. Just before leaving, he decides to climb on the tallest trampoline. He will have to jump from there. It’s not a race or a competition, there are no judges and he sure didn’t undergo any special preparation. No opponents, scores or co-efficient tallies: the challenge is
with himself. The fear, the shame, the self-achievement all blend in together in a single gesture, the dive, that encompasses one of life’s off-springs. Foster Wallace sheds a light on a specific moment, critical and crucial, in the life of the young boy. An anecdote (or tale) that thanks to his style will forever be withdrawn from triviality.
As readers and audiences are led to re-think of past crucial moments, a heart-moving vibration from underneath, a desire for courage and to face the world. This might not be a sport story strictly speaking, but it sure tells, in the frame of a contemporary non-place and though a magnificent and descriptive writing style, all the beauty of a challenge – match of all matches – with life itself.
