“Miles gloriosus” di Plauto nella traduzione di Pier Paolo Pasolini

In 1961 Vittorio Gassman asked Pier Paolo Pasolini to work on a new translation of Plautus’ Miles gloriosus which the poet entitled Il Vantone. Pasolini, however, wrote something more than a mere translation: translating both the text and the context, he reinvented this comedy, introducing many popular characters and thus, creating a theatrical plot parallel to Plautus’ original text. The most interesting aspect is the innovative use of the (Roman) dialect with the precise intention of creating a link with the popular theatre of his time.
«That Italy has an analogous type of theatre which shares common roots with Plautus, is something undoubtedly questionable», wrote Pasolini in 1963 in his comment to the first edition of the Il Vantone, adding also that «a similarly intense exchange and friendly dialogue between the text and the public like in Plautus’ theatre can be found but only in the curtain raiser».
The Neapolitan director Arturo Cirillo has entrusted Pasolini’s work to an all-male company who “dress up” to interpret the various characters of the comedy. Playing with a text in Roman dialect, the director takes us «on a journey through the musicality of dialect and the rhythm of verse […] to narrate a simple and ancient story with the sensitivity of today’s theatre» affirms the same Cirillo.
