Written in 1888, Miss Julie is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and scandalous of Strindberg’s works. It talks of the conflict between the sexes and the pitiless battle between the old aristocracy and the new emerging bourgeoisie which was disrupting Scandinavian society in that period.
In this production directed by Lorenzo Montanini, 19th century Sweden is transposed to present-day Latin America. Set in Colombia during the summer solstice, the meeting between Julia and the servant Juan will change their lives for ever. While Juan seeks to emancipate himself, Julia wants to escape from the ties that bind her to an affluent but empty existence. This bilingual performance, interpreted in English and Spanish, is presented in the form of a dance of death which brings together a powerful corporeity and intense, natural-like text.
