The young Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour stirred a sensation at the last Festival d’Avignon with Fatmeh and Leila’s death, two shows inspired on the theme of shared memory in Arab culture.
In a social, political and religious context where the body is often censored, Chahrour takes in consideration the current models or types of masculinity, and their presumed superiority. With a dancer, two musicians and an actress, he recalls rituals dealing with grief, where women are expected to mourn and lament.
