What if Shakespeare had gone to Africa and had written Macbeth there? Yes, it would still be a sombre yet colourful and a truly contemporary work.
In the city of Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a group of refugees find a chest full of costumes and props abandoned by a theatrical troupe who had staged Verdi’s version of Macbeth in the colonial period. They also decide to put on a performance which in some way recalls their situation, in that country ravaged by civil war, and torn apart by a thirst for power. The director, playwright and South African artiste Brett Bailey together with the composer Fabrizio Cassol has put together an explosive, highly-coloured and contemporary version of Macbeth. The stories, cultures and the different eras are mixed together in an evocation of the violence of war and the folly of mankind.
