Daniel Veronese’s radical theatrical adaptations start with the titles: thus the Three Sisters becomes “A man who drowns”, Uncle Vanya turns into “Spying on a woman killing herself” and The Seagull, “The children have slept “. This last production is the third and last chapter in the trilogy inspired by Chekhov’s works.
Enigmatic, ambiguous and fascinating like his previous works, the plot of Los hijos takes place inside a single ambience inhabited by ten actors. The setting is a choral performance of The Seagull in which the various characters are perennially moving in their anxious search for something or someone. «In this way, the Argentines are similar to the Russians – says the director – always searching for something that we don’t have».
In the play, Treplev’s various vicissitudes or the missed amorous appointments between Trigorin and Nina are represented rather like a television soap opera. The director’s great skill is in how he has managed to create a contemporary rendition of Chekhov, adapting the times to the present day: «I need to strip Chekhov bare, remove that dramatic structure which worked and was considered innovative when he wrote but probably Chekhov himself would change some things – continues Veronese.
