One night in 1949, on a plane taking him back to France, Jean Cocteau writes his Letter to Americans in which he writes of his fascination and his disenchantment: he had just visited New York, to present his latest film. In the same period, Miles Davis visited Paris taking with his inimitable bebop style. The Parisian jazz aficionados celebrated his arrival, and one song was enough for Juliette Gréco to open her heart to him. Forty years later, in the Hotel de La Louisiane a Canadian is struggling to forget a past love. His sentimental torment is a sort of parallel of Cocteau’s addiction to opium, or that of Miles Davis for heroin. A performance both theatrical and with some elements of illusionism, Lepage revisits Les Aiguilles et l’opium twenty years after its creation. The result is a hypnotic performance, a journey along a dark tunnel to reach the light at the end.
