Indochina, 1930. A fifteen year old white girl and a wealthy Chinese heir. Their secret passion lies obsessively at the heart of this artwork, by one of last century’s greatest female writers. In 1984 Marguerite Duras published The Lover and today Isabelle Huppert brings the story back to life.
In the story, it is as if the author were looking through an old photography book. Characters are brought back to memory, and among them, is the lover. The many differences between the girl and the descendant make their relationship impossible at public eyes. Hence, together they re-create their own private world within the walls of the bedroom.
