First presented in 1913 as La boîte à joujoux (a ballet in a prologue, three frames and an epilogue) it was conceived for puppet theatre and dedicated to the daughter of the composer, Emma. The show sees toys as protagonists that come to life during night-time, becoming metaphore of the most classic theatre ‘topos’: a love triangle between a doll, Pulcinella (the mask) and a toy soldier. During the play the action builds up following a vision that is connected to some problematic aspects of the genere and to the topic of violence against women.
