Andrej Konchalovskij was invited by the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia to stage for the sixth edition a new work. the choice fell on la Bisbetica Domata (The Taming of the Shrew): «I could do all Shakespeare because it is life itself, a fantastic combination of earth and sky, vulgarity and poetry. his characters are larger than life and have that touch of madness and absurdity that makes them more interesting. i chose The Taming of the Shrew because, for my first italian direction, I wanted an italian opera. this comedy represents your country much more than Romeo and Juliet. it is set in Padua, the characters are all italians, and there is also the commedia dell’arte, even if written by Shakespeare». the protagonists of the comedy will be Mascia Musy and Federico Vanni and the setting will evoke Italy in the twenties, with a scene that will be mostly projected, whose atmospheres will wink the eye to Fellini. «The Taming – said the director – will be the result of improvisation and courage, the qualities that are needed to react to life and destiny. each performance is a journey into the darkness that with the language, the scenes, the personality of the director and of the actors becomes light».
