The “awareness of the opposite”, intended by Pirandello as comedy, comes to the stage through the cynicism of Scarpetta’s writing. The playwright claims to do so for “the beloved audience” that becomes the witness of his vices and feels relieved by their representation. However, by this time, the playful ruthlessness that features Scarpetta’s plays reintroduces the dramatic catharsis. In this play, the boor stranger named Sciosciammocca plunges into the city world that restrains and disorients him, until the legitimate but inexhaustible ambitions of the citizens end up to him as dangerous insanities. Is it a subtle custom satire?  Not really, it’s just for laughs.
