«The protagonist of Gogol’s Diary of a Madman is Aksentij Ivanovic Popriščin, a small business executive with great ambitions, engaged in repetitive, frustrating tasks and with a crush for the manager’s daughter, with whom he doesn’t stand a chance. When Gogol’s hero finally goes mad he asks for the lady’s hand in marriage and proclaims himself King of Spain… although being strapped up and held in a mental institute. In the show, Gogol’s mad character displays a multi-shaped comic sense with the melancholy contribution offered by the actor Nando Paone. He therefore becomes a symbol of a bureaucratic world, in this case at target for it’s petty frailty».
