The Argentine director Alfredo Arias has been invited by the Festival to create a performance on Circo Equestre Sgueglia, one of the most known works of Raffaele Viviani. Arias’ works combine an interest for the spectacular nature of the musical with the passion for theater en travesti, the grotesque and the mask: all elements which brilliantly lend themselves to the staging of Circo Equestre Sgueglia. Set between caravans, rides and trapezes, the drama unfolds through the ups and downs of the family which owns the circus, a universal metaphor of a poor and precarious world.
About the text, Arias says, «Viviani drags us into a double game. A game we have to imagine – that of the circus representation – and one we are witnessing – that of life. He chooses to highlight love lacerations. He tells us that there is no possible shelter: even the circus, designed as a last refuge, is exposed to the vertigo of passion and its inhabitants can be deported at any time to sink into the largest loneliness».
