“When you will know for sure that i am dead, do not call my name because death and rest would stop. When you know for sure that i am dead just mumble a few syllables. Say something like flower, bee, tear, bread, tempest. Don’t let your lips find the eleven letters of my name. I am tired, I have loved and reached silence.”
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna is politically begging for self silence. In this anthem to forgetfulness he confesses the importance of action. Only actions count, and the only matter when the time is right. He reached this idea perhaps during the time when on a dirt field, a little over twenty years old, he was struck by an asthma attack. In the hospital his father was very concerned, and discouraged him to continue playing rugby. Ernesto replied that “Viejo me gusta el rugby, I’ll stop playing it only the day that I die”. Therefore only actions count, and only the moment when they are taken. The Canto is a tribute to the actions of ‘Che deportista’. AFter these consideration with Danilo, we would have like to say “flower, bee, tear…”, but what came out instead was music and rugby.
