With this latest work, Fabrice Murgia – Leone d’Argento Biennale Theatre 2014 – continues his reflections on the growing gap between north and south: the free circulation of people, the (in)visibile frontiers that surround us, virtual space and the hyper connections omnipresent in our lives. As in his previous works, the director makes use of his meetings and experiences: a workshop held in Saly (Senegal), with other local actors; his research into on-line fraud in the Ivory Coast; his encounter with the incredible life of Aaron Schwarz, a young American IT expert who committed suicide at the age of 28 after having battled against the FBI and the US government.
Black Clouds tells the story of on-line fraud organised by Ivory Coast web pirates, sexual tourism as a new form of “colonialism of the body”, the digital gap between north and south. Behind everything, the web, this omnipresent network which is synonymous with emancipation, but also domination and servitude.
