«This artwork – writes Radhouane El Meddeb – was originally meant to be a cabaret project, but during the time of rehearsals and as result of the political events it became something more radical. I understood that I couldn’t use cabaret to celebrate a forgotten world.
The Arabs have lived through some magical times, if we take the films going from the 40’s to the 70’s… their magic was in the papier-maché backdrops, the bogus and sometimes tacky atmospheres.
Au temps où les Arabes dansaient… is a distant echo recalling songs and dances; they are captured in the sweetness of their hope and memory, in the excitement of the hearts and bodies involved».
