In the Bordone Room of the Vienna Art Gallery, a man sits and looks at a famous painting by Tintoretto. A second man, younger, is standing and observes the first man looking at the picture. A third man – one of the custodians of the Art Gallery – observes both. This is the diagram of Antichi Maestri, one of the last examples of Thomas Bernhard’s narrative, transformed by Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi into a theatrical study on the function of art, the limits of beauty and the neurosis of modernity.
