Animali notturni was born from the elaboration of a text commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre London which aimed to address a political theme in a Spanish context. Juan Mayorga, thus focuses on the integration of migrants, an issue which could not be more topical today. The author has elaborated on his previous work Himmelweg, developing the text in another direction: a vision of the relationship between oppressor and victim, but free from any explicit representation of violence. Indeed, his work highlights the crude systems of hierarchy and power that determine our daily lives.
The four main characters in the text are like nocturnal animals; they act in the twilight. Concealment, camouflage, and “the unsaid” are strategies used to defend their own vital space. Indeed, each has some secret to hide…
