The story is set just after the 1943 amnesty, when a sailor of the Italian Na-val Force tries to make return to his home. He learns that the term “dolphin” is preferred by those who are in charge, while “fera”, a synonym, is used by those who fight for their lives. The modern epic poem Horcynus delves into the use of language, which can represent an instrument of social revolution, and on the meaning of Death (Misdea), which is the other leading protagonist in the story.
«Our births and deaths are just absurd – says D’Arrigo in the Horcynus – but our lives don’t have to be that way. We must raise from this state of degradation; and should we fail, let it be known and written that we had once fought, and rebelled against Misdea».
