In occasione del debutto italiano di Faustus in Africa! (in scena il 2 luglio alle ore 21:00 e il 3 luglio alle ore 19:00 al Teatro Mercadante, durata 1h30), il Campania Teatro Festival, diretto da Ruggero Cappuccio, ospita una speciale masterclass con Adrian Kohler e Basil Jones, fondatori della Handspring Puppet Company. Appuntamento il 3 luglio, dalle 11:30 alle 13:00, al Teatro Mercadante.
Intitolata “The Periphery and the Centre”, la masterclass è un’opportunità unica per conoscere da vicino due dei più innovativi artisti del teatro di figura contemporaneo. Handspring Puppet Company, attiva dal 1981, ha conquistato la scena internazionale con creazioni indimenticabili come i cavalli a grandezza naturale commissionati dal National Theatre di Londra per lo spettacolo War Horse e la figura itinerante di Little Amal, che ha fatto il giro del mondo.
Profondamente influenzati dal Bunraku giapponese e dalle pratiche dei burattinai Bamana del Mali, i due artisti esplorano il potere evocativo della marionetta, rendendola protagonista di spettacoli intensi e visivamente straordinari.
La compagnia teatrale, con sede a Città del Capo, in Sudafrica, fonde infatti artigianato antico, innovazione tecnica e temi drammatici moderni e, in quattro decenni, ha collaborato con artisti, registi, musicisti, attori e gruppi teatrali di fama mondiale, esibendosi in più di 30 Paesi.

(on stage July 2 at 9:00 PM and July 3 at 7:00 PM at the Teatro Mercadante, running time: 1h30), the Campania Teatro Festival, directed by Ruggero Cappuccio, presents a special masterclass with Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones, founders of Handspring Puppet Company, scheduled on the 3rd of July, from 11:30 a.m. until 13:00 p.m.
Titled “The Periphery and the Centre,” the masterclass offers a unique opportunity to meet two of the most innovative artists in contemporary puppet theatre. Founded in 1981, Handspring Puppet Company has gained international acclaim with unforgettable creations such as the life-size horses commissioned by the National Theatre in London for War Horse, and the travelling figure of Little Amal, who captivated audiences around the world.
Deeply influenced by Japanese Bunraku and the traditions of Bamana puppeteers from Mali, Kohler and Jones have long explored the evocative power of puppetry, making it central to performances that are both visually extraordinary and emotionally intense.
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, the company combines ancient craftsmanship, technical innovation, and modern dramatic themes. Over the past four decades, Handspring has collaborated with world-renowned artists, directors, musicians, actors, and theatre groups, performing in more than 30 countries.
The event is free and open to all.
The masterclass is especially recommended for the audience that has already attended the performance on the 2nd July.
