The renowned Bolivian theatrical research troupe was founded by César Brie and Giampaolo Nalli in 1991. In its twenty five years of activity, the Teatro de los Andes has continually explored the history and memory of the Andes, delving into its mythology and tradition. Following the Naples performance of MAR, the troupe will hold a residency programme in Santa Croce del Sannio, working together with the inhabitants of this small town.
MAR is constructed as a poetical allegory of the sense of loss, and the sea as a metaphor of a vast and unknown horizon, particularly so for the Bolivian people. The story tells the tale of three brothers who decide to undertake a journey to fulfil the last desire of their dying mother: to go where she has never been before, and to abandon herself to the waves, and then to die. The journey is a metaphor of their innermost relations; it penetrates their unconscious nourished by an imagination of tales and apparitions, phantasms and persons lost in the War of the Pacific.
