In ancient times the gods would descend from Olympus and get involved with human affairs. Gods got women pregnant and goddesses became pregnant, so the shadows of deities walked alongside the wretched bodies of mortals. Those who listened to the stories of the gods would shiver due to the staggering similarity, as if they were listening to their own story. Ovid’s Metamorphoses provides the summary of those stories which had previously been handed down orally. The bard who told them, often an old man, took his strength from the miraculous encounter between accumulated wisdom and the treasures of mythology.
