Prima assoluta
In 1939 the great historian of religion, Mircea Eliade wrote Iphigenia, a play in three acts characterised by the theme of sacrifice – considered by the author as very contemporary – and the relationship between “Eternity” and “Sacredness”. Translated into Italian in 2010, the text aroused the interest of the Apulian theatre director Gianpiero Borgia who has now prepared this latest adaptation to be performed in the Archaeological Park of Pausilypon. The cast is composed by Franco Branciaroli, Lucia Lavia and David Coco.
In this new adaptation of this tragedy, the great military strategist Agamemnon is overwhelmed by his own dream while Achilles – the personification of immortal glory – is a hero empty of any initiative; blinded by earthly love, he is ready to renounce his very name. Thus Iphigenia, the virgin elected by the Gods, finds herself alone and uncomprehended in her desire for death.
«If I hadn’t read something else into the sacrifice of Iphigenia told by that genius of Mediterranean culture of the fifth century BC – sustains Eliade – I would not have found it necessary to retell an ancient Greek myth for today’s people».
