Yo, el heredero was written by Eduardo de Filippo in 1942, who added it to a collection entitled Cantata dei giorni pari. At the centre of this comedy, charity is described as more beneficial to those who do it than those who receive it. In the play, Eduardo’s caustic humour strongly criticizes bourgeois society for showing off its hypocritical do-goodism and its excessive wealth.
After the death of his father Prospero, Ludovico Ribera expects to be taken in by the Selciano family, where Prospero had lived for thirty-seven years, thanks to the kindness of the head of the Selciano household, a true benefactor of the penniless. When the Selciano heirs refuse, Ludovico accuses them of turning his late father into a parasite at first, but later succeeds in convincing them to let him stay, thus giving them the opportunity to keep on playing the role of benefactors.
Following his success with the Teatro Marìa Guerrero in Madrid, Francesco Saponaro comes to the stage with an all-Spanish version in Eduardo’s legendary theatre, the San Ferdinando. This is a symbolic return to the work’s origins, on the very stage where the great Neapolitan playwright and actor once stood.
