«His name was Campoluongo. They would go to him for help in resolving the controversies of the Sanità neighbourhood, and he would go. The Campoluongos were furniture makers, not members of any organized crime network; indeed, they lived by their trade». These were the words that Eduardo De Filippo used to explain the birth of the protagonist of Il sindaco del Rione Sanità, a comedy which aims to give «a precise definition of justice».
This is the first production of one of Eduardo’s works by Marco Sciaccaluga and is interpreted by Eros Pagni. Regarding this comedy, the director affirms: «Il sindaco del Rione Sanità is a complex theatrical piéce which bring together comedy and tragedy, realism and symbolism (even Christology). A text which comes to life by the fundamentally ambiguous Antonio Barracano, who is contemporaneously an organised crime boss and idealist, a sort of Robin Hood for the ignorant; a character whose strength resides in his possibility to unite good and evil, positive and negative, ups and downs. This has been the inspiration for me to stage on of Eduardo’s most Shakespearean works. For me it is not a comedy with an ideological base but more a tragedy which has its authentic roots deeply planted in human existence».
