With Nata sotto una pianta di datteri Gigi Di Luca directs again Pamela Villoresi after the success of Memorie di una schiava. Freely adapted from the novel Yusdra e la città della sapienza by Daniela Morelli, it is the story of Leyla, an almost blind woman, matriarch of a nomadic tribe, who led her people on the move and also guided their inner journey, and Yusdra, her favorite niece, consigned by Leyla to the West when she was still a child. Both were born under a date tree, a sign of destiny, which indicates them as the keepers of the ancient knowledge the tribe has passed on from generations. Between them there is a man, a storyteller of their lies and truth, a thug provocateur, the prying eye that forces the poet matriarch to a confession and the young woman, dispossessed of her identity, to a decision. «The work – says the director – moves from my need to give voice to popular feelings, to that sphere of intimacy in which they live violent contradictions and where continues the search for their own identity».
