Following the success of The Taming of the Shrew – which went on tour in Italy after its debut at the 2013 Festival, – Andrei Konchalovsky presents two versions of Cechov’s works, Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters: a unique opportunity to hear the great master’s work in its original Russian language. The director has used the same scenography and cast of actors for both performances, thus highlighting the undisputable similarities between these two masterpieces.
For years, uncle Vanja has managed the estate of his niece Sonja, regularly paying the incomes to his brother- in-law, Prof. Serebrijakov, widower of his sister and father of Sonja. The arrival of the professor and his second wife Elena interrupts their tranquil lives. When Serebrijakov announces his desire to sell the estate to resolve the financial difficulties of the family, Vanja tries to shoot him but misses.
Konchalovsky affirms that «Cechov is able to see and to discern life as nobody else in the history of literature. Cechov expresses this very clearly in his concept of art: “On stage, the actors drink tea, they dine, while their destiny leads then to ruin”».
