Dolore Sotto Chiave is a single act work by Eduardo De Filippo and part of the collected work Cantata dei giorni dispari. First written as a radio play in 1958 (for Eduardo and his sister Titina), it was staged for the first time in 1964 at the Teatro San Ferdinando in Naples, with Regina Bianchi and Franco Parenti who were directed by the author.
The rich storyline contains many echoes of Pirandello: while Rocco is away traveling, his wife Elena dies. Lucia, the dead husband’s sister, thinking that Rocco is fraught with distress, keeps the news hidden from him by locking the door to his dead wife’s room. She invents a terrible illness, stating that any emotion upset could prove fatal to Elena. The truth is that Rocco already has a lover and his only desire is to become a widower.
