The Vakhtangov Theatre’s version of Uncle Vanya is not the classical representation of Cechov that one might expect: a country estate surrounded by fruit trees, comfortable chairs and a table covered in lace drapes and a steaming samovar. The Lithuanian director Rimas Tuminas focuses solely on the explosion of passions, shattered illusions and unrealised dreams. The performance is a retrospective summary of the essential components of past actions; uncle Vanya extrapolates memories from the fog of his mind, analysing what mistakes were made and what could have been avoided. More than based on the Stanislavskij’s theatrical realism, the performance is developed through sport, acrobatics and grotesque clownery. Convincing images, the precise, synchronised harmonies of the actors, the unusual perspectives of some of the well-known scenes make this performance the most interesting Russian event of the year.
