These are the words used by Italo Calvino to comment on this text sent to the publishers Einaudi which then published the work. Malacqua, with the subtitle “Four rainy days in Naples waiting for something extraordinary to happen”, will be brought to the stage by the author’s brother Armando Pugliese, and with music by Nicola Piovani. «At the moment – says the director – I don’t know exactly what type of theatrical work will come out; I haven’t even asked myself that question. In a certain way I am at an advantage, I was his brother; some images correspond to my own memories of our lives lived together. But undoubtedly the poetry of the text is his, so very personal that attempting to adapt this for the theatre has forced me to go deep into our relations, to explore what I knew what I didn’t know about the innermost soul of my brother».
