With the choreography by Alberto Alonso, founder of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, and music by Bizet, and re-elaborated by the Russian composer Rodion Šèedrin in 1967, Carmen Suite was conceived for the legendary étoile of the Moscow Teatro Bol’šoj, Maja Plisetskaja. This work is still considered one of the masterpieces of the Cuban choreographer. In 2005, two years before his death, Alberto Alonso re-adapted Carmen Suite for Svetlana Zakharova, the internationally-renowned star of the Teatro Bol’šoj. A veritable champion of liberty and unbridled seduction, Carmen had been one of the great fictional heroines since her creation in 1845 by Prosper Mérimée. An enthralling story – contemporaneously classic and modern – in which the balanced and apparently simple choreography seems to contrast the powerfully expressive execution by this eloquent and charismatic Ukrainian étoile.
