Il servo (The Servant) is a short novel by Robin Maugham, nephew of the renowned British novelist W. Somerset Maugham. When first published in 1948, this work was considered “a small masterpiece of abjection”. The version by Pierpaolo Sepe and Andrea Renzi is inspired by the stageplay written in 1958 by Robin Maugham himself, and the film released in the 1960s by Joseph Losey, and dramatized by Harold Pinter. Now Lorenzo Pavolini’s latest adaptation is a weave of these various texts, considered as a “black comedy” which delves into the psychological makeup of the protagonists, while the plot – set in a house – creates a veritable spider’s web which is slowly and inexorably spun by the “servant”. At the heart of the plot, the exemplary and cruel issue of the domination of one over the other: Hugo Barrett is the manservant in the household of Tony, a rich London lawyer. At first, the manservant appears to carry out his duties zealously but through a series of ambiguous psychological games, the roles of “master” and “servant” are upturned.
