Il Veleno del Teatro written in 1978 by the Spanish playwright Rodolf Sirera has been republished many times in Spain and translated into more than 15 languages, making this work a classic in the repertoire of contemporary Spanish drama. The plot takes the depiction of reality, the concept of acting, and the life of an actor on stage to the very limit.
The plot is set in the 1700s: an actor – symbolic of the victorious bourgeoisie – meets a Marquis from the defeated aristocracy, but paradoxically bearer of values related to truth. Reality on stage is upturned by the role of the Marquis, and becomes confused during the dialogue between the two protagonists. A cynical game set with rhetorical traps will cause the victim to lose himself in a dangerous labyrinth of appearances. With its scathing dialogue, this black comedy of misunderstandings and abuse of power leaves the protagonists prey to an unexpected yet inevitable final twist.
