Summer 1959: Successo magazine commissions an interesting job to Pier Paolo Pasolini: he hits the road in his Fiat 1100, driving along the entire Italian highway coast, travelling from Ventimiglia to Trieste; an adventure that will lead him through the remains of the second world conflict and the first middle-class summer holidays scenarios. This is how La lunga strada di sabbia came to be. It is a travel diary depicting the Italian nation during the time of economic boom and a recent past perceived as distant. Pasolini portrays boys and girls, the faces he meets, the cities and towns where he stops by: Genua, Livorno, Taranto, Rome, Naples, the island of Ischia, Calabria and Sicily. Moreover, Adriatic coast, Venice, Caorle up to the Friuli region.
Sometimes, the movie seems to portray the faces and the landscapes found in the book. The 50 years time lapse disappears, and the Technicolor reveals a black and white soul. Pasolini’s words describe the Contemporary times in our Country.
