«A referee must be impartial… his work consists of having others hate him. The only thing in football everyone can agree on: they all hate him». This brief, but accurate and merciless description of the match official is given by Osvaldo Soriano. However, Hinostroza Belmont is a special kind of ref, a master in his field, much respected from supporters of all teams due to his
extraordinary ability in judgement. An ability that he discovered when he was younger, although the only one: as for everything else, Joaquin is rather unstable.
Vargas Llosa presents a surreal representation of the perfect referee, and with humour he takes us into his personal love-life and family relations, leading to what seems will be a happy ending. The outcome, however, is a brutal and unexpected blood-bath. A Dante-style carnage that Llosa pointsout as possible conclusion to any estranged passion, even a festive one such football. The humour and madness that pervade Llosa’s writing are well embodied in the voice of Roberto Herlitzka, interpreting the text. The reading will lead us through the pleasures and miseries of the sport.
