Ria Rosa is a brilliant variety show that goes from Napoli all the way to New York, and through the biographical notes of Maria Rosaria Liberti. “Chanteuse” at the Cafè Chantant, in 1915, aged only 16, she makes her debut with the stage name Ria Rosa, and is immediately acclaimed for her deep and theatrical voice. In 1922 she goes on tour to New York: she is the first Italian artist to dress-up as a man for the role of “Guapparia”. She then puts up a company and works on the staging of shows dealing with social problems. In 1933 she moves to the States, where she will take a stand in de-fence of the two sentenced anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti. Anti-fascist and a feminist ante litteram, she is considered a “granny” among the feminist movement.
