On a hot summer’s day, Ned Merril is returning after a long absence. he decides to reach the home where he had left wife and two daughters, going through the pools in the neighbour’s green yards. In those houses are all the people that have known him, , so he is on a sort of sentimental journey back home. The travel starts in the villa of some friends that greet him and remind him of his success with women. As for Mrs. Hammer the elder, instead, she shows not to appreciate his presence and scolds him for betraying her son’s friendship. When he finally reaches his destination, he finds the home empty: his riches and his success were only the result of his fantasies. Taken from the short story “The swimmer” (1964) by John Cheever, it was one of the first films to deal with the topic of alienation in American society.
