«My version of Barry Lyndon draws it’s emotional content from Kubrick. The novel by Thackeray was useful in outlining the characters, the situations and stories that are so far away from us.
An essential aspect of the show is that it deals with the topic of dreams, as if all that could ever be desired in life was written in the stars, and man had only to look and wish for it.
Barry falls in love with the woman that will change his nature, going from middle-class farmer to the Marquis of Lyndon, crossing the boundaries of aristocracy and invalidating a world he does not belong to. His new world appears to him somehow magic and ghost-like, as if the other characters were only phantoms».
